In the heart of New York’s vibrant music scene of the 1960s, four young boys formed a band that would capture the spirit of a generation. Known as The Teemates, this talented group quickly became a local sensation, leaving an indelible mark on the East Coast music landscape. Thanks to Blue Pie Records, their legacy is now preserved in the Teemates archive, reminding us of their contributions to rock and roll history.
The Teemates—comprised of Bobby Calumet (formerly Pulhemus), Rich Staff, and their friends—first took the stage at the 1964 World’s Fair, making waves with their uncanny ability to emulate The Beatles. Their popularity soared, and they soon became the house band at Scott Muni’s “Rolling Stone” Disco, where they captivated audiences night after night. Their debut LP, Jet Set Dance Disco, showcased their original songs alongside covers of rock classics, solidifying their status as a prominent act.
Reflecting on his journey, Bobby shares a vivid memory from his childhood:
“One extremely hot day in August around 1953… I was just getting through a summer cold and still felt miserable. Suddenly, this song came blasting through the open window. It was ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley and The Comets. From that moment on, I was a demon in search of anything rock n’ roll.”
This passion led Bobby to form a band in 1963 after winning a Battle of the Bands contest, ultimately becoming The Teemates. Their rise coincided with the British Invasion, positioning them as New York’s answer to the Beatles. They competed with emerging groups like The Young Rascals and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, performing at iconic venues, including the legendary Metropole Cafe on Broadway.
Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including the looming Vietnam War, which ultimately led to their disbandment in 1965. Bobby, however, continued his musical journey, backing numerous legendary acts and even releasing a recent EP of original tunes, showcasing his enduring love for rock and roll.
Now at 82, Bobby reflects on his past with both nostalgia and pride:
“It’s the newcomers and the kids’ time now. I want everyone who hears my songs to reflect back on that scruffy little kid sitting in that flower garden in the ’50s—and the me who is here today.”
The Teemates not only left a musical legacy but also built lasting friendships with iconic artists like Chubby Checker, The Ronettes, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Their story is a testament to the vibrant spirit of rock and roll and the camaraderie among musicians that defined an era.
As we look back on the Teemates’ journey, we celebrate the music that continues to inspire new generations. The archives preserved by Blue Pie Records ensure that this slice of musical history remains accessible for all to enjoy, keeping the spirit of The Teemates alive for years to come.
