Unconventional. Uninhibited. Unpredictable. “If Courtney Love was a little more sober, that’d be sort of like her.” Emma isn’t a regular artist. This young woman from Sydney Australia packed up her bags in 2006 and moved to New York City to pursue her creativity. Within a year she had recorded her first album “Her songs are a refreshing mix of Annie Lennox and the Ravonettes…” She then began opening for Bazaar Royale at ‘Snitch’ in New York City, sponsored by New York City radio station Liveunlimited fm. New York City artist Computr then asked her to feature on his album.
Asking Emma to describe her sound is almost impossible, “I would say that it’s new music. I listen to a lot of rock and metal as well as ska and 90’s electronic. I’ve always been influenced by and into that type of music. I couldn’t pick exactly what it sounds like.” Her influences include “… Tim Burton, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Marilyn Manson, NIN, No Doubt, Iggy Pop, Tori Amos, Garbage, Courtney Love and Peaches.”
After completing her second album in September 2008, she headlined her first show in New York City at the Annex on October 8th 2008. Emma doesn’t just stick to music. She has a fashion line, described as “Eccentric couture… femininity with a masculine sort of edge.” It was debuted at a charity fashion show for NYU. Amuka noticed Emma wearing items from her fashion line and asked if Emma would dress her when she opened for the Pussycat Dolls at Beatstock 2008.
The line, debuted as part of Emma’s performance, when she opened for George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic as part of the CMJ Music Festival at B B Kings in Time Square October 2008. Following that performance she performed on a float in the Village Voice Halloween Day Parade with members from Blue Oyster Cult and the bass player from Alice Cooper.
“It was the best experience of my life – there were two million people. It was incredible to perform with such legends.”
Emma is ready to take on the music and fashion world. With her introspective yet fiery and strong spirit, she’s ahead of the game and making her mark as a lifestyle artist. Emma doesn’t want to be and won’t be judged for her eccentricity.
“Emma is raw and passionate, with a big heart individual sound that resembles Tori Amos or Tracy Bonham… She will bring something original, dynamic and powerful to the music industry…”
Emma was born in Sydney, Australia on October 1st 1983. She finished her high school and continued to study music and acting. Her studies took her to NYC, returning to Australia to attend the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts. She then auditioned and was accepted into the highly respected ‘Maggie Flanigan Studio Acting School’ in NYC, where actors such as Sam Rockwell and Kristin Davis studied.
Whilst at the studio, she also studied Music at NYU and sang on demos for producers at Avatar Studios in NYC, working with the sound engineer who has worked with Missy Elliott, Eve and Bob Dylan. “… regardless of your musical preference, no doubt she’s real, especially her lyrics, which I feel just about anyone can appreciate.”
