Earlier this year, DL Down3r teamed up with Uno Tha Prodigy and brought us something really special – Road Ahead, which is an emotional piece for sure, and it’s spoken from two individuals who know a lot more struggles than most. They really had to grind hard to become the successful artists which they are today, and they aren’t shy to tell you – because with the pain and passion in their words and talent, you’ll know they aren’t lying about it. And now they’re back. They said in their last song there was a long road ahead for both of them, and they were right. In this track, they’ll let you into their lowest and darkest moments, and do what it takes true balls to do: show their vulnerability. They’ll show you how they Lost Their Way.
LYRICS:
Intro:
I’m feeling awake now, I’ve been sleeping, feel that I lost my way.
I see my mistakes now, I’ve been on a road that’s been blinding me.
I’m looking for better days I’ve been fed up, realising I just ran away.
But I will not give up, not in the midst of breaking through this wall that’s surrounding me.
Uno:
Ya,
I’ve been looking up and asking for answers, dealing with this pain from the madness smashing the road, praying for the veil to unfold for this fire, gonna trial me and go put my soul out. I won’t, give up in the midst of a victory, history got me pondering infamy, cold, probably why my veins are frozen far from the man that all y’all know. I’ve been masking, distant from my real life, sure, if I didn’t I would leave myself exposed, but I’m never breaking, won’t lose my goals I just gotta take it, won’t lose control. Never pick apart my pieces, I tried just to let it go release it, I’m fine, in the midst of hope is eating my pride, every minute gone is creeping, my time stays strong. I will not give up and turn, away from the lessons I’ve learned, I gotta change it while I feel this developing hurt, at least shit don’t never reverse! Believe I’ll make it not break it, that’s all mine, I just gotta face it, focus my eyes and I never brace it don’t push aside using all my patience to see that I’m…
Chorus:
I’m feeling awake now, I’ve been sleeping, feel that I lost my way.
I see my mistakes now, I’ve been on a road that’s been blinding me.
I’m looking for better days I’ve been fed up, realising I just ran away.
But I will not give up, not in the midst of breaking through this wall that’s surrounding me.
Down3r:
Ah,
Gotta go with the flow I know this.
I wonder even if they notice.
On my toes Imma grab my focus, gotta shot one chance don’t blow this.
See the greed, see the hate, see the envy.
And I’m tired of my taste getting empty.
Second wind, kicking in, give me ten feet, all alone in a room, now there’s ten mes!
Ooh, got me fighting all my demons, got me swinging at the ceiling.
Ah, got me picking at the peelings, now I’m all at my feelings.
But I’m, but I’m ten toes down and my chin’s up, gotta focus on the road ahead and never give up.
Ten toes down and my chin’s up, gotta focus on the road ahead and never give up.
I’m fighting to stay up on track, shadows keep bringing me back, my soul yeah it’s under attack, fighting but they fighting back.
Feels like I’m losing this battle, slipped and I fell off the saddle,
But hoping I’m ready to channel.
Because…
Outro:
I’m feeling awake now, I’ve been sleeping, feel that I lost my way.
I see my mistakes now, I’ve been on a road that’s been blinding me.
I’m looking for better days I’ve been fed up, realising I just ran away.
But I will not give up, not in the midst of breaking through this wall that’s surrounding me.
It’s a sobering song, and the fast paced rap gives it a frantic energy that will suck you in with just a few bars. You can hear the emotion in the chorus, the passion in the fast rap flow, and the depth of the experiences in the lyrics. The chorus complements the rap beautifully, each note resonating with the appropriate amount of melancholy that this track deserves.
If you’ve been through what these two have, some of these lyrics will probably seem quite relatable to you. Lines that may seem abstract or innocuous such as “picking at the peelings” and “all alone in a room, now there’s ten mes” take on a wholly different meaning when you’ve struggled with these vices yourself. And if that’s you, well… Uno Tha Prodigy and DL Down3r made it out, so you can too. Never give up, just like they didn’t. Recovery isn’t a straight line, it’s more like a ripple on the surface of water, going in and out until it’s finally still again. Relapse is part of it. So long as you never give up in the end, one day you’ll make it through to the other side and say “no more” to your vice. Yeah it’ll be a Long Road Ahead. You might even Lose Your Way. But in the end, determination will help you find it again. That’s the message of this catchy song, and we think that it rings true.
Through fierce and funky west coast rap, Down3r shares his prolific work with the rest of the world, and the stage with west coast rap legends such as Coolio, Brown Boy, Jay Tablet, Lil Young, Snoopyblue, LadyDice, Baby Bash, Steel City Hustlers, King Z and DJ Kane to name a few.
From powerful messages, lyrical poetry and sharp comments on society, to G-funk and Trap/EDM hype songs, he proves that age and experience is the opposite of a liability in today’s rap game. Blast it loud, get ready to feel something, and rest assured knowing that hip hop never died!
