Curb Dogs was started in 1999 between Mark (lefty) Shehab on guitar and vocals and Tobie (Bee) Groenewald on drums as a means to have fun and to look closer at soceity through musical expression. After a long line of unsuccessful bassist candidates, we finally found Barry Beaurrain (Banana). In 2002 Bee decided to concentrate on his plans to leave for America. As a result we recruited Andrew (Spencer) Spencer who has added a refreshing twist to the music.
In 2001 we recorded our first full-length album entitled ‘Don’t quit your day job’ ourselves, which was accepted with much appreciation from the fans. The album is very edgy and raw, with a blatant DIY Sound reminiscent of the early punk era.
The band gigged all around the South Africa during the years including venues such as The Purple Turtle, Mercury Live and The Whammy Bar in Cape Town, the Big Easy in JHB, Star Of The West in Kimberley, Mystic Boer, West End, Hunters Sports Pub, The Underground And Déjà vu in Bloem not to mention countless band bashes.
We’ve been privileged enough to play alongside such excellent bands as Fuzi Gish, Hog Hoggity Hogg, Shifty, Skirtbox, Groinchurn, Dieversion, Eyebee, Tryst, Miserychord, Half Price, My Ex-Girlfriend, Sweet Victory, Leek and the Bouncing Uptones, Pet Flyz, The Finkelsteins and many more.
Mark decided to explore Scotland and England in 2004. During his sebaticle he played drums for a band called Red Museum, and had a quick stint playin guitar with a band called The Shakes. Taking in as much of the culture as possible, he played gigs in and around Preston, North England.
Returning to South Africa in 2005 Barry had moved to New Zealand and Andrew was involved full time in his accounting studies, so Mark decided to record their second full lenth album called ‘life, love, meat, politics’, on his own. This album turned out smoother (due to advances in software and hardware components), but still kept the raw edge, keeping true to the Curb Dogs motus operandi.
